"I don't come out to my garden when it rains".
Follow These Easy Steps: To Tell If Your Soil Drains Well
Dig down 12 inches

12 inches down
24 inches across
Dig across 24 inches
You should end up with a hole that is 1 foot deep and 2 feet wide.
Fill the hole all the way to the top with water
If the water is still standing 1 hour later . . . then your soil has poor drainage.
Solution:         Simple . . . Easy. . .Fast
To fix a bad drainage problem can be as easy as just adding sand to the
soil. Or it can be more difficult where you may need to find a different
location for your asparagus plants.
First, try adding sand, and sawdust and till that in. Sometimes that will fix
the problem. Also add in some fine pebble-like soil. Mix all together and
re-test for drainage.
Or, make a Raised Bed for your asparagus plants. Till down about 2 feet
and add the above ingredients. Mix all together then add side-boards and
start to build your bed from their.
Raise The Bed . . .  Indoors or Outdoors
Raised Beds: In doors

This is a raised bed that I made in December. It had 64 garlic plants in it and I keep it in
my warehouse.   . This is temporary  in-doors- raised bed . It gives  the basic idea of
what a raised bed is. This one is made out of  a strong cardboard box.

To keep the weight down so the cardboard box would hold up I put empty bottles across
the bottom of the box. Then on top of the layer of bottles I put cardboard the length of
the box.  The layer of cardboard  had  wholes punched in it -- for air circulation. The
idea of the bottles was to raise the depth of the box. The cardboard box was to deep so
I lined the bottom with bottles and a layer of cardboard.

Next I put down some Styrofoam from a package that came in the mail. Broke the stro
up into small chunks. Then added the compost, sawdust, soil and planted the elephant
garlic. The garlic will be sold early in the Spring at the Farmers market as either plants
or fresh garlic.
Raised Beds Outdoors:

Till the soil under the bed first. Make the soil humus composted . Then add  your frame. Depth of
the bed depends on what you are planting and the condition of the soil under the bed. It you are
planting a rooted veggie or flowers, then your frame might need to be 24 inches deep.

Now put the frame in place and fill with good humus, composted, soil that is well mixed.  Down!!
PS:  The frame can be made of used materials. Look around you might find someone throwing out
some wood. I good place to look is around new construction site. Also saw-dust makes the soil
soft and crumbly-usually it is free. Check around for a saw mill . It must be untreated saw dust.
Plants love it and its free.
